FUNDING FOR FREE TENNIS COURTS AT BRAYBROOK PARK

Braybrook Park will receive a major sporting facelift with a $92,000 Brumby Government funding boost, the Minister for Sport and Recreation, James Merlino, announced today.

Mr Merlino said two grants for the park would go towards developing the free public tennis courts and to construct a multi-court facility, featuring basketball, netball and street soccer courts.

“The Braybrook community will soon have a sporting precinct where they can meet friends and play a variety of sports, free of charge,” Mr Merlino said.

“Together, these projects will go a long way towards increasing community pride, participation and health and well being for local residents.”

The Braybrook Park “Free to Public” Tennis Courts project will receive $50,400 and the Multi-court Facilities redevelopment more than $42,200.

The projects include landscaping, installation of court drainage systems and biodiversity of the parks through tree planting.

The Brumby Government grants are part of the Community Facility Funding Program – Minors Category, which provides grants to upgrade sporting facilities across Victoria.

Footscray MP Marsha Thomson welcomed the funding boost and said both grants would be well received by the local community.

“The multi-court facility is something that our community has been calling for and we are delighted the Brumby Government is helping to bring the project to fruition,” Ms Thomson said.

“This is a wonderful result for Braybrook and these projects will encourage more people, especially the younger residents, to play and enjoy sport in their local area.”

Mr Merlino said the grant represented the Brumby Government’s commitment to provide quality sport and recreation facilities across Victoria.

“We want people to stay healthy and physically active, which is what our Go for your life campaign is all about – getting more Victorians involved in sport and recreation in their local community,” he said.

Maribyrnong City Council has committed more than $90,000 towards the Braybrook Park projects. Works are expected to begin in July 2008.
