Funding Boost For Glenroy Football Club
Glenroy Football Club will receive a $60,000 Brumby Government grant to improve facilities for the growing number of footballers in the area, the Minister for Sport and Recreation, James Merlino, announced today.
Mr Merlino said Glenroy Football Club had been a vital part of the local community since 1949 and the grant would provide a fantastic boost for the area.
“With nine junior teams and two senior teams, this club can be credited for producing football stars like Footscray’s Mark Hunter and Carlton’s John O’Connor,” Mr Merlino said.
“This important funding will go towards redeveloping the Sewell Reserve Pavilion, which has not been upgraded since it was built in 1969.”
The $200,000 Sewell Reserve Pavilion redevelopment includes the construction of new spectator toilets, player and umpire change-rooms, first-aid room, office space, kitchen and social areas, and will also improve access for people with a disability.
Moreland City Council has also committed $60,000 towards the project with the remaining $80,000 coming from the Glenroy Football Club.
The Brumby Government grant is part of the Community Facility Funding Program – Minors Category, which provides grants of up to $60,000 to upgrade sporting facilities across Victoria.
Mr Merlino also announced a $60,000 grant to Hadfield Tennis Club, Moreland’s third largest tennis club, to replace four existing courts with a synthetic grass surface.
Pascoe Vale MP Christine Campbell welcomed the funding boost and said both grants would be well received by the local community.
“These clubs and the sports they play are an important part of our community and the grants will help to provide quality sporting facilities for players, families and supporters,” Ms Campbell said.
“These grants will encourage more people, especially the younger residents, to play and enjoy sport in their local area.”
Works on the Sewell Reserve Pavilion are expected to begin in September 2008.
