Swan Hill Clubs Score Funding For Court Upgrades

26 Sep 2008

Wednesday, 24 September 2008 Tooleybuc-Manangatang Football Netball Club and Manangatang Tennis Club will soon be competing on top quality multi-use sports courts thanks to more than $54,000 from the Brumby Government.

Sport and Recreation Minister James Merlino was at Manangatang Recreation Reserve today to announce the grant as part of the Country Football Netball Program and said it was a great boost for the local community and neighbouring towns.

“The Brumby Government is taking action to ensure all Victorian communities have the facilities they need to encourage healthy, active involvement in sport and recreation,” Mr Merlino said.

“This grant will be used to construct two new netball courts and install court lighting and new fences. The two courts at Manangatang Reserve will be remarked to allow for both netball and tennis to be played.

“Sports clubs like Tooleybuc-Manangatang FNC and Manangatang Tennis Club play an important role in bringing people in communities closer together and that’s why this announcement is so important.

“Our local sports facilities are vital to the strength and wellbeing of clubs and their communities and by improving the quality of those facilities we are also encouraging greater participation for all Victorians.”

The funding is part of the $10 million Country Football Netball Program, which has contributed towards the redevelopment and construction of more than 200 community sporting facilities.

Mr Merlino said the new competition-standard multi-use courts would be enjoyed by sports clubs and schools and would also support local social games and activities.

“Nearby Manangatang P-12 College will have access to the new multi-purpose facility as part of their physical education program and will support the development of local teams for netball and tennis,” he said.

Mr Merlino said the grant represented the Brumby Government’s commitment to provide quality sport and recreation facilities across Victoria.

“We also want to provide more opportunities for people to stay healthy and active, which is what the our $150 million Go for your life campaign is all about – getting more Victorians involved in sport and recreation in their local community,” he said.

Mr Merlino commended Swan Hill Rural City Council for its $10,000 commitment to the project, Tooleybuc-Manangatang FNC for providing over $11,000 and Manangatang Tennis Club for its $6000 contribution.
