$4 MILLION FOR VICTORIAN STATE SPORTING ASSOCIATIONS
State sporting associations will be able to share in $4.14 million in Brumby Government funding after the Minister for Sport and Recreation, James Merlino, today launched an updated two-year grants program.
Mr Merlino said the 2008-2010 State Sporting Association Support Grants (SSASG), over two years for the first time, would provide a significant boost to community sport across Victoria.
“With record numbers of Victorians playing sport and exercising, it’s more important than ever to help our sport and recreation organisations provide more opportunities for people to get healthy and stay active,” Mr Merlino said.
“These grants are a $4.14 million investment from the Brumby Government into the health and well-being of Victorians.
“The funding will help our peak sporting bodies to encourage all Victorians to participate in local sport and outdoor recreation activities.”
There are two categories available for the 2008-2010 allocation of SSASG funding:
• Organisational Support Grants – to provide grants to support State Sporting Associations manage their strategic direction and operational staffing requirements.
• Future Directions Project – to provide grants for organisations that are building partnerships and networks within the community with a focus on increasing volunteer participation.
“This year we are encouraging organisations to apply for funding for projects that address a specific need within their sport and community, drawing on partnerships with councils and other sports organisations or clubs to provide solutions,” Mr Merlino said.
“Some of last year’s inspiring initiatives included a recreational cycling club and an introductory surfing program for people with a disability.”
Mr Merlino said the SSASG Program had provided assistance to state sporting associations for more than ten years, with 76 organisations currently receiving funding.
