Minister for Territory and Municipal Services today launched the Sailability ACT jetty project.

"The new Sailability jetty is a wonderful facility which will be used by not only the members of Sailability but also the Canberra community," said Mr Hargreaves.

"The ACT Government announced the construction of this jetty in the 2007/08 Capital Works improvement budget and provided $135 000 for the project.

"Work has commenced on the Jetty and is expected to be completed in November 2008.

"Sailability ACT formed in 1998 and has been based in this location since January 2003. There are currently 87 members (32 with a recognised disability), a number of casual sailors with a disability, and is supported by 10 regular volunteers.

"Sailability ACT have worked tireless for their sport and worked hard to engage the disabled community in this wonderful outdoor sport.

"The new jetty will also be an excellent facility for the wider community to come and visit and enjoy the lake and its foreshores.

"The sailing season, up until now limited to the warmer months, can now be extended and sailors can get in more training for various competitions both in Australia and overseas, as well as getting out there for general enjoyment.

"Sailability can now encourage more volunteers to join in to assist sailors. It is important to acknowledge the essential services of volunteer helpers on whom the sailors depend.

"The project has strong links with the Government's Social Policy Plan to promote the inclusion of people with disability, building and supporting participation in sport, supporting an active lifestyle and supporting the role of volunteers," said Mr Hargreaves.
