More than 19,000 South Australian students have met the challenge to be more physically active through this year's Premier's be active Challenge, which ends today.
The Challenge asks students from Reception to Year 9 to be active for at least 60 minutes, five days a week, for up to 10 weeks.
'In its second year, the Challenge and its participants have gone from strength to strength,' Education Minister Jane Lomax-Smith says.
Students results are still being collected but already the number completing this year's Challenge is more than double that of last year.
Students who completed the Challenge came from more than 220 schools, 79 more schools than completed the Challenge in its pilot year.
"We are seeing excellent results in schools in both metropolitan and country areas, from Eden Hills Primary School to Tailem Bend Primary School, where every student that had registered for the Challenge completed the 10 weeks.
"Through the Challenge, young South Australians not only learn about the health benefits of regular physical activity, including the prevention of heart disease and diabetes, but that being active can be great fun, especially when friends and family are also involved.
"I am confident that although the Challenge is over for another year, our students' enthusiasm for being active will continue.
"With the onset of this fine weather and school holidays starting next week, there is no better time for young people and those young at heart to be active."
Students who completed the Challenge will be awarded their medals later this year, and the schools that performed exceptionally well will be recognised at a Premiers reception on Friday 7 November at ETSA Park.
This year, students have been motivated to lead healthier lifestyles by the 11 Premier's be active Challenge Ambassadors top South Australian sportspeople who have visited schools across the State.
"Following the tremendous amount of interest from schools wanting to host an ambassador, we will be signing up more spokespeople to inspire our students next year," Dr Lomax-Smith says.
The Premier's be active Challenge for 2009 will begin on the first day of Term 1. For more information including how to register, visit www.pbac.sa.edu.au
