Monday, 06 October 2008
The Central Victorian Hockey Association in Golden Square was tonight presented with the Education Award at the Brumby Government’s 2008 Sport and Recreation Awards for its unique umpiring program. Sport and Recreation Minister James Merlino presented the awards at a special event held in the MCG Members’ Dining Room and said it was a great opportunity to celebrate the work of organisations and individuals right across Victoria’s vast sporting landscape.
Mr Merlino said when a shortage of experienced umpires was severely impacting Victorian hockey, the Central Victorian Hockey Association stepped in with its innovative Progressing Umpire Program.
“The program supports new umpires by providing experienced umpires as mentors. After completing their accreditation, trainees work with one of the experienced umpire mentors to develop their skills and experience,” he said.
“It managed to increase the number of regular umpires during the 2008 winter season from nine to 36 – a great achievement.”
Mr Merlino said the tireless efforts of unsung heroes from across Victoria were recognised at the 2008 Sport and Recreation Awards.
“The Brumby Government is taking action to ensure all Victorians have every opportunity they need to encourage healthy, active involvement in sport and recreation,” he said.
“Tonight’s winners provide inspiration for others to pursue their ambitions on Victoria’s sporting fields and for that they should be congratulated.”
Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan MP said organisations like the Central Victorian Hockey Association helped to encourage people of all ages and abilities to lead a more active, healthy and involved lifestyles.
“Sport and recreation in Victoria is so strong because of the hard work and dedication of the unsung heroes working behind the scenes – those who give up their time to do the many jobs supporting the wide range of sport played around the state every weekend,” Ms Allan said.
The 2008 awards were sponsored by Victoria University, AFL Victoria, Connex, the Herald Sun, Deakin University and V/Line.
