Chelsea Primary School students can now play year-round on a new weather-resistant synthetic pitch, thanks to a $100,000 Brumby Government grant. Sport and Recreation Minister James Merlino today joined the Member for Carrum Jenny Lindell at Chelsea Primary to officially open the new synthetic surface, which was made possible from savings achieved through the Commonwealth Games.

“The Brumby Government is taking action to ensure all Victorian communities have the facilities they need to encourage healthy, active involvement in sport and recreation,” Mr Merlino said.

“The new artificial ground includes a new soccer pitch and play area, and it will ensure local students have more opportunities to get involved in sport – no matter what the weather brings.”

Mr Merlino said the Brumby Government grant was delivered through savings achieved from the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

“The dividend from the Commonwealth Games has delivered lasting legacies to sporting clubs, organisations and schools right across Victoria,” Mr Merlino said.

“Our local sports facilities are vital to the social fabric, strength and wellbeing of any community and by improving the quality of those facilities we are encouraging greater participation for people across the state.”

Ms Lindell said she was delighted Chelsea Primary School was the beneficiary of a “synthetic legacy” from the Commonwealth Games.

“This is a fantastic new sports field which will be well used by students at Chelsea Primary for many years to come,” Ms Lindell said.

“Managing the effects of the drought is a challenge for all Victorians, and I am proud Chelsea Primary is leading the way in ensuring sport in this region will continue to thrive well into the future.”
