Interim Report on Outdoor Recreation Program

The Minister for Sport and Recreation Michelle O’Byrne today said that the State Government had received interim findings of an independent risk review regarding an outdoor recreation program.

The Wilderness Program has provided personal growth opportunities to targeted groups in Tasmania since 1983.

“The Wilderness Program has an excellent reputation and has played a key role in helping many Tasmanians including those who are at risk to regain self esteem, address behavioural issues and become confident, happy members of our community,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“The Wilderness Program was started by Project Hahn Incorporated before it was transferred into Sport and Recreation in 2005.

“Earlier this year a need to undertake a review of the risk and emergency management systems governing Wilderness Program courses was identified.

“A suitably qualified and experienced consultancy was appointed to conduct the review last month.

“A final report will be provided in December 2008, however the consultants are providing interim advice as the review progresses.

“This interim advice has highlighted some issues with present Wilderness Program procedures and insurance provisions.

“The State Government has decided that the programs would be halted until the end of 2008 to enable the Wilderness Program to adequately address the issues raised by the interim findings.

“We have acted now to address these issues rather than wait for the final report in December.

“We are currently obtaining advice from an insurance broker so as to ensure adequate coverage is afforded to participants of the program.

“Participants affected by cancellation of Wilderness Program courses this year will be offered places as appropriate as a first priority on courses when the program starts up again, with those places offered free of usual fees.

“The changes that we put in place in response to the risk review will ensure that the excellent work carried out by the Wilderness Program is enhanced and is done in the best possible environment,” Ms O’Byrne said.
